SunGard’s Astec Analytics has compiled the hottest stocks from around the globe for the week beginning 13 April 2015 and this time its mines, rigs and automobiles.
German car manufacturer Volkswagen AG (VOW3.F) is Astec’s top pick for Europe, the Middle East and Africa after chairman Ferdinand Piëch suffered a rare defeat as senior directors voted against his wishes and agreed to a contract extension for CEO Martin Winterkorn.
In the cash market the company's shares had been losing ground throughout the week, while on the borrowing front, though somewhat skewed by its upcoming dividend, Astec's data has suggested short sellers were reducing their positions somewhat; borrowing volumes falling around 20 percent.
Now something of a mainstay in Astec’s list, Transocean (RIG) released its latest fleet report, which showed amongst other things, one new contract, one positive extension and one termination, as well as saying the company would be scrapping the GSF Explorer rig, incurring an impairment charge of between $100 million and $120 million in Q2 2015.
Astec commented: “Overall the report was positive, and helped bolster RIG's stock during the week, while on the borrowing front volumes have continued to ease off a little over the past two weeks, now down about 6 percent in that time.”
In the Americas, Ford Motor Company’s (F) shares eased off slightly during the week, though data from Astec does suggest short selling activity has also been on the decline for the past month, with borrowing volumes falling around 46 percent in that time.
Elsewhere in the Americas, Brazilian mining giant Vale SA (VALE) has seen interest as more turmoil in the iron ore market has producers on the back foot, with S&P cutting its price target on the base metal this week and putting producers on “credit watch negative”.
In addition currency moves for the Brazilian real, which strengthened against the US dollar, adds to even greater concerns for the country's large multinationals.
On the borrowing front, Vale has seemingly seen short sellers becoming more optimistic in the past few weeks, with borrowing of its American Depository Receipt falling by 15 percent in that time.
Australian miner Fortescue Metal Group (FMG.AX) is Astec’s top pick in the Asia Pacific region as its average breakeven price had fallen to $39/tonne thanks to lower oil prices, meaning the current iron ore market price in the region of $50/tonne offers a healthy profit.
Astec added: “On the sec lending front all signs still suggest short sellers are increasing their bets on the downside—borrowing volumes now about 15 percent higher than six weeks ago.”
Finally another regular name, solar panel maker Hanergy Thin Film Power Group (0566.HK), has seen fresh attention after it followed up news of its partnership with mobile kitchen maker Shandong Taian Changan, confirming it has also agreed a deal to provide its Mobile Energy+ solution to Suzhou Eagle, a domestic maker of sightseeing vehicles.
Despite this news its share price was unmoved, though Astec's data does suggest short sellers continued to cover their positions—borrowing volumes now down about 15 percent since the start of April.
