RMA keynote The Mooch heads to the West Wing

Anthony Scaramucci, who appeared as keynote speaker at last year’s Risk Management Association (RMA) securities lending conference in Florida, has been appointed as the White House communications director, effective 15 August.

Scaramucci, nicknamed ‘The Mooch’, accepted the role last week, less than a year after appearing at the RMA’s 34th Annual Conference on Securities Lending to offer his thoughts on what Donald Trump’s administration would look like.

The prominent and outspoken founder of SkyBridge Capital, who served on Trump’s campaign team, will report directly to the president and is expected to continue his role as an unofficial adviser alongside his day job.

Speaking at the RMA conference in October last year, Scaramucci stated that Trump would rip up much of the financial services regulation implemented since 2008 in his first 100 days as US president, a prediction that seems accurate in general intent, if not in actual achievements.

“If you over ref the game, you spoilt it,” Scaramucci said at the RMA’s event in Florida.

Scaramucci was critical of the ‘Fed-centric’ economy that has emerged since the financial crisis, again cautioning against too much oversight.

Financial crises will continue to occur, Scaramucci argued, given the nature of fear and greed, so monetary policy and regulation that works to move markets back to ‘risk-on’ mode, rather than prevent further ‘risk-off’ flights to safety in the future, should be the aim.

For now, “we just need to hang in there”, Scaramucci said, because financial services are like fashion, in that trends come and go, and time always tells.

Following his appointment Scaramucci said: “President Trump has accomplished an incredible amount in a short period of time, and I am proud to join his Administration as he continues to deliver for the American people.”

Trump said: “Anthony is a person I have great respect for, and he will be an important addition to this administration."

"He has been a great supporter and will now help implement key aspects of our agenda while leading the communications team. We have accomplished so much, and we are being given credit for so little. The good news is the people get it, even if the media doesn’t.”

Scaramucci came under fire almost immediately in his new role after historic tweets were dug up showing his apparent disagreement with Trump on several core issues.

The now deleted tweets criticised Trump’s ambitions to build a wall on the Mexican border, the lack of gun control in the US, and on Trump’s dismissal of climate change.

The RMA's keynote for this year's event is Seth Carpenter, chief US economist for UBS.

Carpenter previously served at the US Treasury from 2014 to 2016 and was nominated by President Barack Obama to be assistant secretary for financial markets after being deputy assistant secretary for macroeconomic analysis.
