Lloyds Banking Group has appointed John Winter as CEO of corporate and institutional banking, effective 1 September.

Winter, former Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) CEO for EMEA, brings almost four decades of experience in corporate and investment banking to the position having worked in several financial institutions since 1985.

He will lead the corporate and institutional banking business unit — a part of the Commercial Banking division — which supports corporates with turnover above £100 million, and supports financial institutions.

Winter most recently worked at MUFG, where he was regional executive and CEO for EMEA, with responsibility for all of its global markets, corporate and investment banking businesses.

Prior to this, he spent 15 years at Barclays as CEO for corporate banking and previously as head of its European investment banking business.

David Oldfield, currently CEO of commercial banking, will support the transition to Winter’s leadership of corporate and institutional banking, and will also continue in his role as interim group chief operating officer.

In addition to Winter, the Group has appointed Jayne Opperman as CEO, consumer relationships, and Laura Needham as chief internal auditor.

The appointments come after the Group moved to a new internal structure on 1 July 2022.
Commenting on the announcement, Charlie Nunn, group chief executive at Lloyds Banking Group, says: “We have a strong leadership team to execute the Group’s long-term strategy.

“All three of the new joiners bring deep experience of banking and their success in transforming and growing franchises at other leading financial institutions will benefit us and our clients and I look forward to welcoming them.”
